Is Plumbing the Right Job for You?

While many people feel the push to go to college, it’s also important to realize the importance of learning trades as well. After all, a college degree is not the only avenue to landing a good paying job. In fact, U.S. News ranked plumbers as the 7th highest paying job without a college degree, earning a median salary of $53,910 with the best-paid 25 percent earning $71,140 in 2018. If you’re someone who enjoys working with your hands and solving problems, becoming a plumber might be right for you.

How Do I Become A Plumber?

Becoming a plumber is a two part process that involves practical training and study.
Traditionally, someone hoping to become a plumber would undergo a four-five year apprenticeship program where they would receive the necessary technical education while also being able to complete the required amount of hours of on-the-job training under a licensed professional. Many unions and businesses require an apprentice to receive a minimum of 246 hours of technical education and up to 2,000 hours of paid, practical training working with a licensed professional. Those who have successfully completed their plumbing apprenticeship program are called journeymen.

Benefits of Becoming a Plumber

Plumbers gain valuable knowledge and provide meaningful work. Everyone runs into a leaky faucet or clogged drain, or experiences plumbing problems at some point. No house or community is immune, and therefore, plumbers will always be needed and in high demand.

Plumbers are also able to create flexible work schedules. Plumbers are needed based on customer demands. Some customers will need appointments urgently first thing in the morning, while others may be able to wait until they come home from work in the evening or when they have time on the weekend. Choose if you’d rather work mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, or a rotating schedule.
